Building Use Policy

Turnstile Policy

Effective Sunday, March 19, 2017, visitors to the Green Library will be required to scan their barcodes at the turnstiles to enter and exit the library.

Persons affiliated with FIU will use their FIU One Cards for this purpose; all others will register with the Guest Services Attendant to be issued an entry card with a barcode for their use.

A valid government issued photo ID will be required to register.

Non-FIU affiliated visitors will be given access for a limited length of time after which they will be required to re-register.

Entry cards will be good only for entry and exit and will not entitle the bearers to any further privileges.

In the event that a FIU affiliate does not have their One Card with them, they will be issued a temporary card good for one week, during which time they must secure their One Card. There will be a limit of three temporary cards per person.

Alumni who no longer have their FIU One Cards can request one from the FIU One Card office or register at the Guest Services desk to be issued an entry card.

FIU Retirees can use their FIU One card, if they still have it, or they can register at the Guest Services desk for an entry pass.

Non-FIU affiliated visitors, alumni and FIU retirees will have access to the library during the following hours:
  • Monday – Thursday: 9am-9pm
  • Friday: 9am-6pm
  • Saturday: noon-6pm
  • Sunday: noon-9pm

Use of Library Spaces

The Libraries' mission is to provide the FIU community with a pleasant environment conducive to study, research, and the continuation of the educational process. It is important that there be procedures and policies in place to protect the health and safety of library users and preserve materials, equipment, and the facilities. Dedicated areas of the libraries have additional policies that may apply to that area. The following policies apply to all public areas of the building.

Printing in the Library
  • To print in the library, please bring your FIU One Card with money on the card, or cash (bills only, no change) to load the card at our ValuePort station.
  • If you do not have an FIU One Card, a printing/copy card can be purchased for $1.00 (one dollar) at the charging station--please note that these cards will need to be charged with value after purchase, as they do not come with preloaded funds; Printers also accept credit/debit cards, for an additional fee.
  • Printing can be done from any of our computers, including laptops and will be sent to the printers located nearby.

Food and Drink

Most snack food and drinks are permitted in the building:

  • chips, nuts, and cookies are considered snack foods
  • pizza, fries, hamburgers, sub-sandwiches, and foods with strong odors are not permitted (this is not a complete list)
  • food deliveries from vendors (pizzas, etc.) are prohibited and will be turned away at the entrance to the libraries

Patrons are requested to:

  • use spill proof containers;
  • deposit containers in waste receptacles; and,
  • as a courtesy to other patrons no food with strong odors should be brought into the building.
  • Tech Hub @ Green Library and the ASK! Center at Hubert Library maintain a strict no food policy and only liquids in spill proof containers will be allowed.
Disruptions

Disruption to the study and research of patrons or the interruption of their education process is strongly prohibited. Examples include:

  • Creating excessive noise
  • Harassment of others
  • Odor constituting a nuisance or health and safety concern
  • Any behavior that disturbs users or staff and interferes with use of the facility
Destroying or Damaging Materials, Equipment, Software or the Facility

The following are examples of actions that are prohibited (this is not a comprehensive list).

  • The destruction, mutilation or defacement of any materials
  • The damaging of hardware or equipment
  • Misuse of furniture or any other components of the facility
  • The intentional introduction of viruses into any system
  • Tampering with software or changing equipment settings
Smoking

Smoking or other use of tobacco is prohibited within the facility, including the use of electronic cigarettes

Animals

No animals are allowed in the facilities other than those assisting persons with disabilities.

Radios, CD Players, Cell Phone or Other Equipment

The use of any equipment that disrupts patrons is prohibited. Beepers and cellular phones must be placed on vibrating mode or turned off. The use of cellular phones in public areas of the library is prohibited. The use of video cameras or other recording equipment requires the permission of the library administration.

Library Staff Equipment

The use of library staff equipment by patrons is prohibited.

Children and Minors

Individuals under the age of sixteen (16) must be attended by a parent or caregiver. Parents or caregivers that bring children into the facility are responsible for monitoring their activities and regulating their behavior. Disruption of patrons by children or minors is prohibited.

Skateboards, Roller or Inline Skates, and Bicycles

Skateboarding, roller, or inline skating and cycling are prohibited within the building. Bicycles must be parked in designated outside areas.

Loitering, Soliciting, and Advertising

Loitering and soliciting for donations or accosting patrons or staff for any purpose that disrupts their use of the facility is prohibited. Non-FIU advertising materials may not be displayed or distributed without permission from the Library Administration. No materials may be affixed to library interior or exterior walls without permission from the Library Administrative Office.

Presence in Library When Library is Closed

Patrons may not remain in the library when the library is closed without prior permission from the Library Administrative Office.

Group Tours & Instruction

Any persons wishing to bring groups of people into the library need to obtain prior permission from the appropriate department.

Persons who are unwilling to abide by these policies will be asked to leave the facility. Those refusing to do so will be subject to removal by Public Safety.

Group Study Rooms Policy

Limited numbers of Group Study Rooms are located at both the Modesto A. Maidique Campus and Biscayne Bay Campus libraries and are available only for currently enrolled FIU students. They are available for reservation, through the online study room reservation system.

Group Study Room Availability

From the Library's homepage, click the link for “Group Study Room Reservations” to reserve a group study room in the Modesto A. Maidique Campus and Biscayne Bay Campus Libraries.

The following rules apply for both the Green Library, Hubert Library, and the Engineering Library Services facility:

  1. A valid FIU One Card is required to check-out a room. The student must present their FIU One Card at the front desk. No exceptions. No other form of identification will be accepted.
  2. The group study rooms are provided for currently enrolled FIU students in groups of two or more for the purpose of collaborative learning.
  3. Rooms are not available for individual use.
  4. Rooms may not be left unattended at any time. If a room is left unattended its use will be relinquished.
  5. Neither the Library nor the University is responsible for unattended, lost, stolen, or damaged personal items.
  6. No food or beverage - other than water in a closed container - is allowed in the group study rooms.
  7. A key for the room must be charged out at the Circulation Desk for the allotted reservation. Renewals are possible only if no other group is waiting for the room.
  8. The student whose card was used to check-out the key is responsible for the key, and the condition of the room. If the key is lost or not returned, there will be a replacement fee of $110.00.
  9. At the end of the allotted reservation, the key must be returned to the Circulation Desk. A $30 per hour (or part thereof) fine will be assessed if the key is not returned within 5 minutes of the reservation end time.
  10. Please make sure the group study room is locked and empty when you leave.
  11. While discussion is permitted inside the rooms, the noise level should not interfere with the studies of other individuals in the area.
  12. Failure to follow these rules may result in the immediate relinquishing of the room.

Silence / Conversation Policy

To provide a suitable work and study environment for students, faculty, and staff in the University Libraries, a new quiet policy is effective from the start of the summer 2013 semester:
In the Green Library, only quiet conversation is permitted on the second and fifth floors in the library; except in group study rooms, silence must be observed on the third, sixth, and seventh floors. On the third, sixth, and seventh floors cell phone use is limited to the stairwells.
In the Hubert Library, only quiet conversation is permitted on the first floor; except in group study rooms, only whispered conversation is permitted on the second floor and in the elevators, and silence must be observed on the third floor.
Violators may be told to leave the library and may be referred to Judicial in Student Affairs.

Graduate Study Carrels

Carrel privileges are contingent upon the following rules and regulations:

  • Request for assignment and renewal for the library carrels must be made each semester.
  • Carrel keys are to be returned to the Library Administrative Office upon completion of the carrel assignment = THE LAST DAY OF FINAL EXAMS.
  • Failure to return a key will result in a $50.00 fee for the key, and a $40.00 fee for replacing the lock.
  • Do not hold office hours in the study carrel.
  • Do not place coverings on the window.
  • Library-owned reference materials and periodicals may not be stored in the carrels overnight.
  • All circulating library materials must be checked out to the individual assigned to the carrel.
  • No smoking, food, or beverages are allowed in the carrel.
  • No appliances or additional furniture are allowed in the carrels. (Only one chair allowed per carrel).
  • Carrels are to be used only by the approved individuals assigned to the carrel.
  • The Library is not responsible for valuable items stored in the carrel. (i.e., cell phones, laptop computers, tablets, etc.)
  • The Library is not responsible for any items left inside the carrel after the key has been returned on the last day of finals or after an eviction has been finalized. Everything must be removed from the carrel.
  • Repair costs for any damage to the carrel (beyond normal wear and tear) will be charged to the individual assigned to the carrel. Do not place anything on the carrel's walls.
  • Any kind of aggressive behavior, verbal, or physical abuse toward any Library staff member will result in an immediate eviction of your carrel.
  • Carrel occupants DO NOT have permission to stay inside the building past closing time.
  • Carrel occupants MUST use the carrel at least once per week. If you need to be absent for more than a week, you must notify the Library Administration Office. Failure to do so it will result in immediate eviction of your carrel.

Violation of any of these rules is grounds for revocation of carrel privileges and prevents you to apply for a carrel on the following semester

NOTE: The Library reserves the right to enter carrels as necessary. Library staff will check carrels weekly for use and condition. Any library materials not properly checked out will be removed. Carrel users will be given a one week notice to remove any materials not allowed in carrels (appliances, furniture, etc) if materials are not removed within the time allotted an eviction from the carrel will result.

Lost and Found Policy

Library will not be responsible for items left unattended or items lost in the building.

Device Recharging Stations

The recharging stations are available for self-service use at all times the libraries are open. Students are responsible for their devices, including remembering their access code to the bays containing the devices. Requests for retrievals should be made at a library service desk, which will redirect the request to authorized library staff.

Device retrieval by authorized library staff is available during limited hours. The owner of the device must present a government issued and/or FIU photo ID in order to request retrieval of a device from a locked bay. The amount of time for retrievals may take up to 72 hours. Retrieval is not possible when the library is closed.

The University, University Libraries, and/or Library Employees are not responsible for devices left in device recharging stations.
